Ritual pairs exacting light-roast coffee with a deliberate effort to make specialty coffee less forbidding. Founded by Eileen Rinaldi on Valencia Street in 2005, the independent, woman-owned company began buying directly from coffee farmers in 2007. Its relationship-based sourcing model centers on smallholders it knows, with base prices, quality incentives, and selected infrastructure investments designed to return more value to producers. At the roastery, coffees move through small batches, and the team tastes every roast—a disciplined approach shaped around clarity and the distinct character of each lot. The San Francisco identity remains tangible rather than ornamental. Production runs from a former door-hardware factory in SoMa, equipped with a vintage German Probat and a training lab, while the compact Hayes Valley café operates from a repurposed shipping container on the site of a former freeway offramp. The result is meticulous coffee presented with warmth, accessibility, and a strong sense of place.
